Maps and Network, rough idea.
For maps and networks, I decided to work quite literally with
the word maps. I plan to take people into the centre of Farnham and turn on
their google tracking, and ask them to walk until they feel safe, and like they’re
not being watched. Then, I wanted to trace their movements onto some pieces clear acrylic and place it somewhere close to
a map on the wall, so that the person has to stand at a specific angle to have
one of the movement traces line up with the map. I was also thinking of
potentially having individual words from the sentence ‘WHERE DO YOU FEEL UNSEEN’
on each piece of acrylic. Or, I could have the holding for the acrylics have 5
slots, so that when placed in order infront of eachother, the sentence is spelt
clearly, and the map is completed when lined up.
The purpose of this project would be to explore just how far
people feel they need to be from the town centre before they trust that they
aren’t being watched in some way. Our trust in technology can be foggy at
times, and documenting different people’s idea of what it means to be unseen/
away from technology. The project also proves that no matter where you are, you
can be tracked and/or recorded.
