Research: Chen Wei- Falling Light, Brilliant City

 Brilliant City is an online exhibition on the David Zwirner website, featuring artists; Francis Alÿs, Chen Wei, Stan Douglas, Li Qing, Michael Lin, Gordon Matta-Clark, Ming Wong. The works featured in it all related to the theme of urban landscape.

This was the first piece in this collection that really stuck out to me. The appearance of the windows and the wall texture stood out as looking somewhat like a miniature, due to the array of colours within them. This aspect of the work was something I looked at when texturing the walls of my miniatures, as well as the window cage being an idea that I toyed with. I did this by using glue to bind cuts of match sticks together into a shape that resembled a cage, the issue arose that the cage had to be built in stages, and the best glue to bind them took too long to dry, and the idea was scrapped as it was taking too much time to implement. 

I managed to somewhat recreate the texture of the walls in this piece, on my miniatures, by using a diluted wall filler, and some inks to darken and weather the walls once they were dry.
