Innocent X, narrative

Innocent X, and the Church.

The rough and unsightly nature of this painting gave me one distinct image. It was that of the people of Innsmouth, from multiple works by H.P Lovecraft. Which often depicts the people of the town as crazed fanatics, and cultists. The overwhelming colours and disturbing depictions just reeked of this style, to me. But it was an adaptation, or rather piece of work inspired by Lovecraft's that I felt fitted better. BloodBorne. The ravings of the townspeople of Yharnham(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NM5N6Z14Yg , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RWUULPC1SI , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eO6XZLSJkOA) are perfect examples of the quality of voices I wish to try to capture. Though, I feel voices alone would not fit the shape of the work I want to produce for this painting. Thus, I want to construct a short narrative that will allow me to experiment, and work with Victorian-era-inspired sound, with the theme of cultism, and the idea of heresy and religious beliefs. The intent of this is to listen in on fanaticism, and the fear it can insight. Myself, I've always feared what religion could do to me, how it would change my outlook. Throughout high-school, one of my teachers pressed Christianity on me, and though it sounds silly, I feared it like he was trying to push me into a cult. Now, clearly, I understand that Christianity is a huge benefit to many, and has helped to fix lives. But I wish to capture the side I feared, and how it can warp into something ugly, when seen unclearly. Though I do want to emphasize that the idea I have is highly hyperbolic, and simply reflects the tone of the image I have chosen to work around.

I want a narrative that suggests that people are knocking on the door of the church, begging for the 'Grand one' to bless their water, and to have it build and become more aggressive, with the banging on the door getting louder, and more voices flooding in, this would all be muffled by a heavy wooden door. During this, the listen would hear someone whisper clearly in their left ear 'We need to get you out'. Afterwards, two sets of running steps would be heard, the listeners, and the person accompanying them, with the banging and shouting growing distant behind them. I want to use the sounds of the running to indicate the kind of room they are in, and have them enter a room with a high ceiling, before stopping. "We should be safe here, sire", the listener hears to their left. Followed by the sound of the mans mouth being covered, muffling his cry, as well of the sound of him being dragged away. Followed by the ambiance of the still cathedral, hearing distant glass crack, and hums as well as distant cries, and finally the ring on bells. In the distance, chains are heard, dragging towards the listener, along with the drone of a voice repeating the word 'Heathens'.

I'm not too sure if this is too narrative focused, or too unoriginal, but I hope to further refine this idea, going forwards. I also want to broaden this idea with additional research, and inspiration.

  1. Lots of evocative and atmospheric ideas here. Why not see what you can do without resorting to the use of dialogue? How would you suggest church and religion through audio?
