Final Portraits.

This series was an exploration in emotion and colour, with my aim being to have someone tell a story, and explore the possibility of telling that story with colour in place of text. Working closely with my subject, to tell a story of,m in his case, and evolution in emotion, and the journey of his ideology around the topic of emotion. I feel like the evolution was well represented in the order of the images (at least on the wall, they were not ordered on here).

As far as the editing process of these images, myself and the subject, worked closely together to make sure he felt his story was appropriately represented. By allowing him to choose the photo, and the colour I would edit in, because I felt a bog part of this, was making sure that the image his story was told over, was appropriate to how he felt about the story.  It was then a process of selecting him out of the image, and editing the Hue of each aspect of the background, which I did by duplicating the original, then roughly tooling him out, and erasing anything in the layer that had been falsely recoloured.

The idea's nature was something we played with too, the subject suggested using gels, my idea was to use the gels at night, and cover the flash of the camera with them, this idea came out nicely, but it felt a touch too base. As though it didn't have enough process, or really stand out as something that was unique, and looked a touch too simple.
I also felt that these were leaving a lot out, there was more detail to the images that were recoloured, where as these just feel like they not only eliminate detail, but they feel like they could be done by anyone.

  1. the colour and text has me shook and i love the outfit and glasses as it contrasts with the environment and colour

  2. I love the story and use of text - the colours you've used to cross out the words work beautifully with the colours of the images. The style is beautiful - the space around him in the middle of an empty field and the clothing he's wearing, plus the glasses works very well. It's lovely, both aesthetically and thematically.

  3. I love the one with his sitting in the icy blue field, it really embodies the idea of being surrounded and isolated at the same time, his deadpan expressions throughout the whole thing are also great.

  4. Love the middle blue image I think it's much stronger than the others. Could have been a stand alone photo rather than part of a series

  6. I really like the change in colour and the story behind it. It would have been nice to have your images in the corridor printed bigger as I did not see the colour change until you got it up on the projector. Maybe I'm just unobservant. However, I really like how personal it becomes after you add the text.

  7. The final images are great, I like the saturation of colour it really enhances the message you are going for and the scribbles over the emotive words working with the saturation is really nice. The influence of the subject in deciding the final images and the text works really well with your concept.

  8. For your first photography project I think the theme and concept of the series is well captured, the post production shows the intensity of the emotion although I think you could have fine-tuned the use of colour. I like how you've obscured the emotional language whilst still being able to understand some words upon close inspection.

  9. I like how you put emotions and colour together and I also like how you crossed out some words asI know that for some people they find it hard to talk and write about how they feel.

  10. Your comment during your presentation on the sparse red being to easy, read very mature, and i'm glad you kept pushing as the images you did craft have a gorgeous dream like feel, especially the blueish hue seen in the grass of your second image.

it was interesting to see you work closely with your model on the final outcome, it feels like there is more perspective and thought given into the piece.

  11. Hate it.

Just kidding, I think the colours are super cool and your intentions have come across really effectively. The text is a great addition and I actually like that you can see the words if you look hard enough - it's like the viewer is having to look more closely into the subject to understand how they feel.

  14. I think your images are interesting, the blue image works well colour wise and I feel as though you should have gone further with the infared idea as this image is quite striking. I cant tell what the second word lined out says so maybe some more fine tuning for your text would have worked better.

  15. I love how you'be explored someone's emotions in this way, it's very unique and interesting. For me the crossing out of the emotional words shows a degree of shyness and vulnerability, like he's still coming to terms with sharing his story.
